KATHMANDU: US President Donald Trump has announced a 10-day ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon, alongside plans to host top leaders from both countries at the White House within the next two weeks.

According to Trump, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun are expected to meet him in Washington within one to two weeks.

He described the proposed meeting as “highly encouraging and historic,” noting it would mark the first such high-level engagement in 44 years.

The announcement came hours after Trump revealed via social media that Israel and Lebanon had agreed to a 10-day ceasefire, set to take effect at 5 p.m. (US time) on Thursday.

The agreement reportedly includes provisions aimed at addressing tensions involving Hezbollah. A statement attributed to the US State Department said Israel retains the right to self-defense during the ceasefire period, but has committed to refraining from offensive military operations in Lebanese territory by air, land, or sea.

Lebanon, under the terms of the deal, is expected to take firm steps to prevent Hezbollah and other non-state armed groups from carrying out hostile activities during the ceasefire period.

The agreement may be extended if both sides show progress in negotiations and Lebanon demonstrates effective control over its sovereignty.

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu has reportedly stated that Israeli forces will not withdraw from their current positions in Lebanon during the ceasefire. Both governments, according to official briefings, have agreed to the overall framework of the truce conditions.
