KATHMANDU: The historic Kantibhairav Jatra, a five-day cultural festival celebrated in Gokarneshwar, commenced at midnight on Thursday.

Observed annually from Krishna Chaturdashi of Baisakh to Akshaya Tritiya, the festival dates back to the era of King Manadeva and holds deep religious and cultural significance in the Kathmandu Valley’s fringe settlements.

The jatra is rooted in the ancient Newar settlement of Deshe, believed to be associated with the palace of Amshuverma. It revolves around a traditional legend of Lord Bhairav and his mother, Kantibhairavi.

The festival begins as the deity from the Dukulachi temple sets out with offerings, sacred food items, and traditional music to visit his mother, whose shrine lies in Uttarbahini.

This symbolic journey represents a son visiting his mother, a theme deeply embedded in local belief and tradition.

Each day, the chariot of Lord Bhairav is carried through different neighborhoods, allowing devotees to pay homage. By evening, the deity is returned to the temple, marking the conclusion of that day’s procession.

After five days of continuous rituals and processions across the community, the festival formally concludes on Akshaya Tritiya, when the deity is ceremonially placed back in the temple.

The Kantibhairav Jatra remains a vital expression of Newar heritage, preserving centuries-old traditions and strengthening community bonds in the region.
