Young Nepali artists reimagine heritage in contemporary exhibition

Lalitpur, December 22
A new wave of Nepali artists is redefining the country’s artistic landscape, merging traditional heritage with contemporary perspectives in a bold exploration of identity, memory, and ecology. The exhibition “Heritage Re-imagined,” currently on display at Classic Gallery in Chyasal, Lalitpur, showcases works by 14 emerging artists who reinterpret Nepal’s cultural legacy through modern artistic expression.
Artists include Anjali Tamang, David Maharjan, Kabir Kayastha, Karima Joshi, Lachhen Nyarten Tamang, Prashamsha Shakya, Preeti Duwal, Rojiya Rai, Sarina Lamichhane, Sharmila Devi Tamang, Shrayam Shakya, Suresh Lawot Tuladhar, Yambang Thapa Magar and Moulik Limbu.

In the exhibition, artists Anjali Tamang, Lachhen Nyarten Tamang, and Prashamsha Shakya are presenting works that blend psychological introspection with spiritual and ecological themes. Tamang’s paintings explore the human connection to the cosmos, while Shakya draws on folklore and lost landscapes to highlight the impact of urbanisation. Artist Preeti Duwal transforms domestic spaces into emotional narratives, and multimedia artist Sarina Lamichhane incorporates urban soundscapes, challenging audiences to reconsider overlooked elements of daily life.
Other contributors, such as Rojiya Rai and Sharmila Devi Tamang, examine resilience in marginalised spaces, whether through shadow, urban wildlife, or the adaptation of birds to city environments. Painters like Yambang Thapa Magar and Kabir Kayastha focus on landscapes and festivals, capturing both natural and cultural transformations in Nepal. Likewise
Through diverse mediums, including watercolour, sculpture, multimedia, and traditional carving, the artists collectively engage viewers in reflections on personal memory, ecological balance, and cultural continuity. The exhibition underscores a growing trend among young Nepali artists: honouring heritage while fearlessly experimenting with form, theme, and narrative.
“Heritage Re-imagined” will be open at Classic Gallery, Chyasal, Lalitpur, until December 25.
