KATHMANDU: Borabadh, a scenic riverside destination along the Saptakoshi River in Barahakshetra Municipality–6, Sunsari, is rapidly transforming into one of eastern Nepal’s most popular tourist attractions.
The Borabadh is rapidly gaining popularity on digital platforms for its stunning sunset views.
Once a quiet riverbank, Borabadh now draws thousands of visitors daily, becoming a favorite spot for families, youth, and photography enthusiasts.

Clips of the scenic sunsets are going viral on Facebook Reels, TikTok, and other social media, attracting both content creators and domestic tourists.
With the increasing footfall, local tourism entrepreneurs have started operating motorboats along the river, further boosting the area’s appeal.
Small businesses have also benefited, with several fast-food stalls now set up along the riverside.
Local residents, however, express concern that tourism in Barahakshetra is overshadowing its religious pilgrimage significance. They urge local authorities to actively promote sustainable tourism in the area.
On Nov 15, Koshi Province’s Minister for Tourism, Forests, and Environment, Sadananda Mandal, inaugurated motorboat services along the river.
He emphasized that the province plans to celebrate “Koshi Tourism Year” with various activities throughout the year, aiming to establish the Koshi riverside as a key tourism hub. Minister Mandal also praised local entrepreneurs for their efforts to boost tourism in the region.
From Protection to Popularity

The name Borabadh originates from the local practice of constructing embankments with sandbags, called bora, to protect the riverbank from annual erosion.
Over the years, this functional structure has evolved into a vibrant leisure destination, offering breathtaking views of the Koshi River and captivating sunsets that attract tourists from Itahari, Dharan, Biratnagar, and neighboring districts.
A Boost to Local Economy

The surge in visitors has opened new opportunities for local entrepreneurs. Coffee shops, food stalls, camping sites, and small resorts have emerged along the riverside, providing employment and generating income for residents.
Daily visitor numbers range between 2,000 and 2,500, peaking over 10,000 on weekends.
Tourists can enjoy overnight stays with basic facilities at reasonable rates, further enhancing the area’s economic impact.

“The sunset here is breathtaking. Borabadh is becoming a favorite weekend getaway for families and youth,” said a visitor from Itahari.
Experiences That Draw Tourists

Borabadh offers more than just scenic beauty. Tourists come to enjoy open landscapes, riverside activities, and photography opportunities.
The culinary appeal is also significant, with local delicacies such as sekuwa, sukuti, fresh river fish, and traditional dishes attracting food enthusiasts. The area has even gained popularity on social media as visitors share its picturesque views and vibrant atmosphere.
Looking Ahead

As Borabadh’s popularity continues to rise, local authorities and business owners are advocating for improved infrastructure, including better roads, parking, sanitation, and enhanced tourist facilities.
These developments aim to support sustainable tourism and ensure a comfortable experience for visitors.

Borabadh is poised to become a must-visit destination in eastern Nepal, promising unforgettable riverside experiences for all who visit.
