Aston Villa defeat Manchester United 2-1, close gap on Premier League leaders
KATHMANDU: Aston Villa continued their stunning run in the Premier League, defeating Manchester United 2-1 on Sunday thanks to two brilliant goals from Morgan Rogers.
With this win, Villa are just three points behind league leaders Arsenal ahead of Christmas.
The victory also marks Villa’s tenth consecutive win in all competitions and their first streak of seven straight Premier League victories in 36 years.
Rogers opened the scoring in the 45th minute with a spectacular strike, giving Villa the lead.
However, injury-time drama in the first half saw Mathias Cunha capitalize on Matt Cash’s mistake to level the score.
Just 12 minutes into the second half, Rogers struck again with another stunning goal, restoring Villa’s advantage.
Despite captain Bruno Fernandes leaving the field due to injury, Manchester United pressed for an equalizer. Cunha had a clear header chance but narrowly missed.
Under Unai Emery, Villa now sit third in the Premier League table, one point behind second-placed Manchester City and three behind leaders Arsenal. Manchester United will be seventh as they head into Christmas.
