Oscar shortlists announced in 12 categories; Nepal’s ‘Anjila’ excluded

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced shortlists in 12 categories for the upcoming 98th Academy Awards.

Nepal’s official submission in the International Feature Film category, Anjila, failed to make the shortlist. Out of films submitted by 86 countries, only 15 were selected.

The shortlisted films include Argentina’s Belen, Brazil’s The Secret Agent, France’s It Was Just an Accident, Germany’s Sound of Falling, India’s Homebound, and Iraq’s The President’s Cake. Also shortlisted are Japan’s Kokuho, Jordan’s All That’s Left of You, Norway’s Sentimental Value, Palestine’s Palestine 36, South Korea’s No Other Choice, Spain’s Sirat, Switzerland’s Late Shift, Taiwan’s Left-Handed Girl, and Tunisia’s The Voice of Hindi Rajab.

The 12 categories with announced shortlists are Animated Short Film, Casting, Cinematography, Documentary Feature Film, Documentary Short Film, International Feature Film, Live Action Short Film, Makeup and Hairstyling, Music (Original Score), Music (Original Song), Sound, and Visual Effects.

Among the shortlisted titles, Warner Bros’ Sinners and Universal’s Wicked: For Good received the highest number of mentions, with eight each. Ryan Coogler’s Sinners appears in seven categories.

Oscar nominations will be announced on January 22, 2026. Awards will be presented across 24 categories, with the 98th Academy Awards ceremony scheduled for March 15, 2026.
