KMC performs rare non-surgical brain treatment

KATHMANDU: Kathmandu Medical College Teaching Hospital (KMC) has successfully treated a woman whose brain aneurysm had ruptured, causing severe internal bleeding, without the need for surgery, giving her a new lease on life.

The 52-year-old Radhika Limbu from Taplejung was referred to KMC by B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, Dharan, in critical condition.

Upon arrival via ambulance from the international airport, her brain had already accumulated significant blood, and even a few hours’ delay could have been fatal.

KMC noted that this successful treatment using neurointervention techniques is a rare case in Nepal.

The hospital is currently the only facility in the country equipped with DM Neurointerventionist and Biplane Cath Lab technology.

Under the leadership of Dr. Arun Paudel, a neurointerventionist and endovascular stroke specialist, Radhika’s treatment began immediately.

The doctors inserted a thin tube through a small incision in her leg, guiding it through her arteries to the ruptured brain aneurysm.

Using a procedure called flow diverter and coiling, they redirected blood flow and stopped the hemorrhage without major surgery.

Over approximately two and a half hours, the doctors successfully stabilized her condition.

The blood clot gradually dissolved, and Radhika recovered without visible scars. She is now improving in the ICU and preparing to return home.

Radhika’s daughter, Anusha, expressed her gratitude, saying, “This technique leaves no scars, allows quick recovery, shortens hospital stays, and is highly effective. It can be used for patients of any age, including those who cannot undergo surgery. Previously, such treatment required going abroad, but now it is possible right here in Nepal.”
