Police form tight cordon at Maitighar to stop Gen Z protest, urge unauthorized groups to disperse
KATHMANDU: Police in Kathmandu have stepped up security at Maiti Ghar ahead of a planned protest by the Gen Z group, expressing sharp dissatisfaction with the government’s functioning.
The demonstration, organized under the “Garikhan Deu” campaign and led by Miraj Dhungana, was scheduled for 11 a.m. on Monday.
Authorities deployed additional personnel as soon as reports indicated protesters were gathering, using loudspeakers to disperse crowds and urging participants to return to their respective destinations.
Officials stressed that no assembly or demonstration is allowed without permission from the Kathmandu District Administration Office. “Only events with prior approval are permitted. Those without permission should leave the area,” a police officer said. Entry to the Maiti Ghar premises and any public chanting were strictly prohibited.
The protest team, which announced its 10-point demand on Sunday, criticized the current government, led by Prime Minister Sushila Karki, for failing to meet youth expectations during its first 100 days in office.
The group’s main demand is the formation of an inclusive, multi-party government, along with calls to amend the constitution through a national roundtable or constitutional assembly to redefine the country’s governance system.
Other demands include the immediate release of Gen Z activists detained during past protests, punitive action against those responsible for suppression, the establishment of a strong anti-corruption commission, live broadcasting of court decisions, voting rights for Nepalis living abroad, and full implementation of the “once Nepali, always Nepali” policy.
The group also urged immediate resolution of long-standing issues affecting microloan borrowers, cooperative victims, and sugarcane farmers.
Dhungana emphasized the need for leadership capable of engaging all stakeholders in dialogue, expressing doubt that the current government could provide solutions.
Meanwhile, the administration maintained a firm stance against unauthorized gatherings, underscoring its commitment to law and order.
