Labour Ministry warns against hiring without contracts, overwork violations

KATHMANDU: The Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security has urged all concerned parties not to employ workers without formal employment contracts, warning that such practices violate labour laws.

In a statement issued today, the Ministry expressed serious concern over complaints from doctors, healthcare workers, nursing staff, and employees in various institutions alleging that they are being hired without proper contracts and are being made to work beyond legally permitted hours.

Citing the Labour Act, 2074, the Ministry clarified that an employment contract includes written agreements or appointment letters defining service terms, conditions, and benefits between employers and workers.

The law stipulates a maximum of eight working hours per day and 48 hours per week. Overtime is permitted only up to four hours per day and 24 hours per week under regulated conditions.

The Ministry has urged strict compliance with labour laws and warned that any violations will face legal action under the Labour Act, 2074.
