Trash barriers installed to collect floating waste from Bagmati
KATHMANDU: The Bagmati Civilization Integrated Development Committee has installed trash barriers to collect floating waste from major rivers in Kathmandu Valley.
The committee initiated the campaign by installing a trash barrier on the Bagmati River, a little above the Guheshwari Temple area.
After completing the installation at Guheshwari, the committee has begun placing trash barriers at six locations along the Bagmati River system under a contract worth Rs 6.5 million. The sites selected for installation include Gokarna Barrage, Tilganga, the Bagmati–Manohara confluence, UN Park, and Karmanasha-Mahohara confluence.
The trash barriers are designed to collect floating waste such as plastic, polythene, bottles, and pieces of wood on the river surface. Waste collected by these barriers can be regularly removed, sorted, reused, and managed safely. This is expected not only to reduce river pollution but also to contribute positively to the aesthetics of the river, the conservation of aquatic life, and public health.
The barrier surface will automatically rise and fall in accordance with changes in the water level.
