Prima Facie at Kausi Theatre: A tough question on justice (photos)

KATHMANDU: The stage play Prima Facie has begun its run at Kausi Theatre in Teku from Thursday, Feb 19.

Written by Australian playwright Suzie Miller, the play was first staged in Australia in 2019 and later gained widespread acclaim on West End and Broadway.

This is the first time Prima Facie has been presented on the Nepali stage.

The production is directed by Akanksha Karki and translated into Nepali by Durga Karki. Renowned theatre artist Pashupati Rai performs the powerful solo role in this production.

The play follows the story of Tessa, a successful barrister who defends men accused of sexual assault.

However, when she herself becomes a survivor of sexual violence, her faith in the legal system is shaken.

The drama critically questions the harsh legal standards that require survivors to provide extremely explicit evidence to secure a conviction.

“Prima Facie” means “at first glance,” and the play powerfully exposes the gap between what appears true on the surface and the reality experienced by survivors.

The play will run until Feb 28, with shows every evening at 5:15 PM except Tuesdays.

An additional matinee show is scheduled on Saturdays at 1:00 PM, according to the theatre.
