KATHMANDU: Senior Nepali Congress leader and Morang-6 parliamentary candidate, Shekhar Koirala, has committed to taking concrete steps for the long-term management of squatter settlements.

Addressing an election rally organized by Nepali Congress in Biratnagar Ward-6, Koirala emphasized that resolving the problems of squatters is one of his top priorities.

He said preliminary discussions with members of the Squatter Commission have already taken place, and soon the commission representatives will visit the settlements to hear residents’ concerns directly.

“I understand your pain and challenges closely. Discussions with the commission members have already happened. They will come here, listen to your problems, and move forward with solutions,” he stated, promising to ensure legal recognition and secure housing for squatters.

Koirala also highlighted the construction of the Biratnagar Ring Road as another key agenda, noting that the city’s development has lagged due to the project’s delay. “If the ring road had been built, Wards 6 and 4 would look completely different, with significant improvements in trade, mobility, and infrastructure. Unfortunately, the work stalled,” he said, pledging to prioritize the project and secure necessary budget and coordination if elected.

Regarding road construction within Ward-6, Koirala acknowledged that projects stalled after contractors absconded, and assured voters he would push to resume and complete the work post-election. “It is disheartening when work begins but remains unfinished. Such delays will not be allowed again,” he added.

Additionally, he announced plans to establish a hospital near the squatter settlements.

Land was allocated for the hospital nearly two years ago, and Koirala stressed the need to move it into the implementation phase to provide residents with essential healthcare services.
