Attending dowry weddings also punishable: Thakur
KATHMANDU: Deputy Speaker Rubikumari Thakur has stated that not only giving or receiving dowry, but even attending or accepting hospitality at weddings based on dowry transactions is a punishable offense under the law.
In a social media post, Thakur emphasized that participating in such ceremonies—whether by attending or partaking in feasts—amounts to endorsing an illegal and socially unacceptable practice.
“Not just taking or giving dowry, but accepting dowry-based marriages, attending such events, or consuming food at these ceremonies is also socially unacceptable and legally punishable,” she wrote. “This practice directly undermines women’s dignity, equality, and rights.”
She stressed that meaningful social change must begin at the individual level, urging people to take personal responsibility in rejecting harmful traditions.
“If we truly aspire for social transformation, national development, and stand against harmful practices, change must start with ourselves,” she said, adding that even small individual actions can lead to significant societal transformation.
Thakur also noted that despite receiving multiple wedding invitations, she has yet to see any clearly labeled as “dowry-free,” highlighting the persistence of the practice in society.
