Kathmandu, April 16

Nepal’s Prime Minister Balen Shah has been included in the list of the world’s 100 most influential people published by the prestigious American magazine TIME.

The 2026 list also features global leaders, including US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. A total of 24 individuals from around the world have been included under the “Leaders” category.

The 35-year-old Shah rose to the post of Prime Minister following his victory in the elections held on Falgun 21. TIME’s analysis highlights that his historic win was largely driven by strong youth support and the impact of last year’s people’s movement.

In a profile written by Editor-at-Large Charlie Campbell, Shah’s rise is portrayed as part of a broader wave of youth-led political change.

The magazine notes that public dissatisfaction with traditional and dynastic politics played a key role in elevating him to national leadership.

Before entering politics, Shah was known as a hip-hop artist. During his tenure as mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, he initiated notable reforms in waste management, education, and healthcare.

His performance at the local level is credited with boosting his popularity nationwide. Shah is also known for his outspoken and firm stance, particularly his vocal opposition to corruption.

His musical background has further strengthened his appeal among younger generations.

However, questions remain about whether he can replicate his local-level success on the national stage.

Amid challenges such as economic inequality, poverty, and institutional corruption, attention is now focused on how effective his leadership will be at the national level.
