Trash barriers installed in Bagmati River to collect floating waste

Kathmandu, December 21

The Bagmati Civilization Integrated Development Committee, an autonomous body under the Ministry of Urban Development, has installed trash barriers to collect floating waste in rivers across Kathmandu.

Installation of a trash barrier has already been completed at Guhyeshwari. The committee plans to install trash barriers at a total of six locations—Gokarna Barrage, Guhyeshwari, Tilganga Eye Hospital, the Bagmati–Manohara confluence, UN Park, and the Karmanasha confluence of the Manohara River. A contract worth Rs 6.5 million has been awarded for the project, and work is currently underway.

The trash barriers are designed to trap floating waste such as plastic, polythene, bottles and pieces of wood, directing them to a designated collection point.

Due to rapid urbanisation and poor waste management, large volumes of floating waste flow through rivers such as the Bagmati, Bishnumati, Manohara and Dhobikhola in the Kathmandu Valley. Installing trash barriers in these rivers allows waste to be removed without obstructing the natural flow of water, thereby helping to reduce river pollution.

The waste collected through the barriers can be regularly removed, segregated, reused and safely managed. This is expected to contribute to pollution control, enhance river aesthetics, protect aquatic life and improve public health.

The barriers will be installed with structures that include rubber conveyor belts and floating components, allowing them to trap floating waste without blocking river flow and automatically adjust up and down with changes in water levels.
